Jarickni Calypso was the first (buckskin) foal for Jarickni Stud in 2001. Out of Jan's beloved Melody who had a wonderful saddle and led career and by super-sire Trincada Mi Choice of Sue Hogan's Brosha Pony Stud. Special from the moment he was born, a typical cheeky colt with the most amazing head, dark doe eyes and sweet set ears - he was always a beautiful pony.
Calypso was left entire until 2yo before being gelded. We believe his bippy-boppy energetic attitude was exacerbated by this fact. Calypso was then broken to saddle by Renee to commence his saddle career after being successfully shown in hand. Always a bit of a speedy pony, he was the next step up for daughters Chloe & Kelsey after graduating off their push-button-go pony Brosha Park Ferrero (also by Mi Choice). He was competed in hand and under saddle, from showing to pony club, campdrafting, games and horse trials. Calypso only ever attended three horse trials in his life - winning his grade at Maldon Horse Trials & Mandurang Horse Trials with Chloe on board.  Maryborough Horse Trials he was eliminated from during the showjumping round after not liking one of the dazzleboards!
Tragically down the line of his adult life Calypso fell victim to compaction colic. An obstruction likened to the size of a basketball had formed inside him and his prognosis was poor. Hospitalised on fluids, pain relief and consistent monitoring, they were able to disintegrate and move the mass through his system. However this experience left Calypso with bouts of unprompted colic episodes for the rest of his life, we feel by that section of bowel sustaining irreversible damage which would flare up time to time. Secondary to this after healing he also come down with pneumonia, his body obviously having a tough time maintaining itself. Calypso saw an early retirement from riding and showing, becoming a wonderful nanny for the weanlings. We tried our best to manage his episodic colics until a final bout that seemed just too hard to come back from. Truly a great loss of a wonderful pony. We fondly look back on his time with us and appreciate just how special he was.

Fondest memories as remembered by me (Chloe):

Being sashed Barastoc Supreme Led Buckskin of the Year 2007 - I was a young handler just leading my pony in his classes that day. My mum and sisters were back at the float getting ready for the ridden sections when the Supreme class was being judged, obviously no faith in us being picked! To have won Champion Led Buckskin Gelding was already such a big thing for me/us that day. Being picked for Supreme was incredible with our very own pony. An unforgettable day.
Riding Calypso through the cross country courses at the few horse trials we attended. I had never competed in them before so it was a new experience for the both of us. I would have been about 10 years old. Calypso was an honest pony, he really did try his hardest for me. Always a foot perfect dressage test and enjoyed a lengthy extended canter out on the course. I remember a few fences that made him slow with his ears pricked, his uncertainty was clear but with a nudge of the stirrups and some assurance he soldiered on through never refusing tyre, water, brush jumps and even jumping through a horse-shoe shaped jumped which he had never seen before in his life. Always felt super proud of him for that.
